bending the design rules
The JEAN stool, designed by Stefan Diez in 2010 for e15, emerged naturally from the dynamic contours of his renowned HOUDINI chair family. Featuring a distinct circumferential brim, JEAN provides subtle comfort and stability, inviting users to pause, rest, and enjoy. The simplicity of its shape expresses Stefan Diez’s design philosophy, blending intuitive ergonomics with thoughtful practicality.
Diez’s strong roots in craftsmanship profoundly influenced his approach as an industrial designer. Growing up among fourth-generation carpenters, he trained first as a cabinetmaker before studying under the esteemed Richard Sapper at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart. His early career working alongside Konstantin Grcic refined his innovative design sensibility, eventually leading him to establish DIEZ OFFICE in Munich. Known for an emphasis on material experimentation and circular design principles, Diez’s studio carefully transforms ideas into tangible, thoughtful objects.
The JEAN stool’s versatile charm has earned it a presence across diverse settings worldwide. From the Manufactum store in Stuttgart, which combines retail, restaurant, and bakery spaces, to Hotel Belvair in Scuol, Switzerland, JEAN effortlessly blends into varied environments. It appears elegantly in red at the Theatre CC de Grote Post cultural centre in Oostende, Belgium, and echoes the artistic ethos of Salvatore Piccione’s hair salon in Frankfurt through its restrained and purposeful aesthetics. The JEAN stool exemplifies Diez’s conviction that good design integrates seamlessly into daily life.

STRUCTURE
Growing up in a household of 4th-generation carpenters, Stefan Diez’s early bond with craftsmanship profoundly shaped his development as an industrial designer. Following family tradition, he trained as a cabinetmaker before studying industrial design under Richard Sapper at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart. Working with Konstantin Grcic for several years, Stefan founded DIEZ OFFICE in Munich after graduating in 2002.
From 2007 onwards Stefan was Professor for Industrial Design at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe, joining the School of Industrial Design Lund, Sweden, in 2015. Since 2018 Stefan Diez is Head of Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 2008, DIEZ OFFICE fundamentally renovated and moved into the premises of a former joinery, the ideal platform for Diez’s distinct combination of hands-on experimentation and technical know-how. Led by curiosity and supported by a network of local craftsmen and specialists, DIEZ OFFICE is dedicated to transforming ideas into actual products with great diligence and proficiency.
Together with his team, Stefan Diez is particularly focussed on the potential of a circular economy, exploring a broad spectrum of everyday products whose raw materials can be recycled and integrated into a more sustainable material cycle. This approach has led to the creation of award winning furniture, luminaires and accessories, in collaboration with internationally renowned manufacturers like Rosenthal, Thonet, HAY, e15, Magis, Vibia, Viccarbe, Wagner and many more.
