A small tree in the room
This occasional table appears to be rooted to the floor. It’s richly grained solid walnut or oak stem tapers to support the streamlined table top with assured elegance. Available in black or bronze. Foster 620 Side Table embodies the cultivation of the original through perfect craftsmanship. Here it complements the Foster 620 range designed by architect Norman Foster for public spaces. The occasional table is a delicate companion to a bench, armchair or sofa – both in a lobby or reception area, and in a reading corner of the living room at home.
The development of the table involved a dialogue with nature. In terms not only of design, but also of production technology. The base is solid wood with an evenly velvety surface. The challenge: how can you get a piece of a tree to brave the elements of heat and cold in all kinds of different climates without splitting? For months the engineers pondered this problem until they found the perfect solution.
The collaboration between Lord Norman Foster, the world’s best-known contemporary architect, and Walter Knoll began with the redesign of the Reichstag in Berlin in the mid-1990s. Today, the armchairs and chairs co-created for the lobby are recognized as modern classics. The Englishman has received some of the most important honors in the world of architecture, including the Pritzker Prize and the Gold Medal for Architecture from the American Institute of Architects, as well as an honorary membership of the Federation of German Architects. In 1990, Norman Foster was knighted by the Queen for his services to architecture.
Walter Knoll has developed a variety of furniture programs together with Norman Foster. Tables in a variety of shapes and sizes complement the Foster series of upholstered furniture. As with Walter Knoll, sustainability is the guiding principle of Foster + Partners. Norman Foster founded the architectural office in 1967. Today Foster + Partners is a global studio for sustainable architecture, engineering, urban planning, and industrial design. It prioritizes looking at the environment as a whole, and takes an integrated approach in order to achieve responsible design.
Side Table. Frame in solid wood with natural hard was finish. Table top in steel, powder-coated in matt black or matt bronze. Please note: the solid wood base, oiled may include sapwood spots, flecks (silvery, shiny areas) or small ingrown pin knots. Color and structure (plain or figured) variations with the base are characteristic of solid wood.
